Plant Trees Program is a voluntary action designed by IBF - Brazilian Institute of Forests. The purpose is to neutralize CO2 emissions from individuals and corporations actions through planting native trees.


The program gets register of landowners who have areas or riparian areas on their properties to be reforested. IBF shows these available areas to companies or individuals who need or want to neutralize the CO2 through native tree seedlings. The ones who are interested can choose the area to plant, then seedlings are given to the landowners.

The company or person, who joins the program to offset CO2, invests in the planting of native trees run by Plant Trees team, which is responsible of seeds collection, choice and preparation of the land, planting, maintenance for two years and monitor for five years of the area.

The process begins with the identification of species that will be planted in the new forest. Then, the seeds are collected and processed for production of seedlings in returned tubes. On the other hand, the coordination plans the recovery area, in order to study the best treatment to ensure the development of trees in the field.

Vision of the Program

Plant Trees Program aims at planting in 1 million hectares, including permanent preservation areas, legal reserves and some parts of forests to form ecological corridors. 200 million of native trees will be planted in an area equivalent to 1 million soccer fields. These fields, includes qualified riparian areas and reservoirs of personal property.

The vision of IBF team during 2 years of Plant Trees Program development was to show  to communityiesand partners the importance of reforestation associated with environmental services by landowners. This virtuous association (forest restoration and environmental services) has been the basic concept that drives all the activities of the Program.

Expected results:

• To recovery degraded in Atlantic rainforest by planting native trees.
• To enhance the biodiversity of degraded riparian areas that border rural properties and to contribute to the creation of ecological connectivity along rivers.
• To improve the capacity of rivers and water sources and control soil erosion and water.
• To create opportunities of recreation in local areas.
